A folding table promises more room when meals are over. That benefit depends on how often it is folded and what has to move first. A compact closed footprint can still need substantial working space while the leaves and supports are being opened.

Understand the type of folding
A drop-leaf top, gateleg table and wall-mounted fold-down surface are different arrangements. Each supports its top differently and occupies a different shape while open. Check the complete sequence and permitted configurations. Do not assume a single leaf can be used independently unless the instructions allow it.
A gateleg example
IKEA NORDEN illustrates a gateleg table with folding leaves. Its supports are part of the usable arrangement, not obstacles that can be casually removed. Check knee space and chair positions around them. The narrow center can remain useful when folded, but its top should not become so full that every meal begins with clearing a display.
Leave room for the operation
A leaf may need lifting space before a supporting leg moves into place. Check the motion beside walls, radiators and other furniture. A wall-mounted table also needs a suitable wall and fixing system. Never treat a decorative bracket or ordinary shelf hinge as a replacement for the specified support structure.
Chairs still need somewhere to go
A folded table saves little practical space if several full-size chairs remain across the route. Folding or stacking chairs can help only when their stored location is accessible. Check their comfort and intended load as well as their compactness. Do not balance chairs precariously against a wall merely to create the advertised closed layout.
Consider daily effort
Try setting the table for an ordinary breakfast, not just a large gathering. If folding it requires moving appliances, unplugging cables and carrying chairs from another floor, a small fixed table may work better. Drawers within a table can hold a few dining items but should not be assumed to replace a full cabinet.
A trial layout before purchase
Use the room in the proposed open state for a day, with a temporary outline on the floor. Observe passing space and where people actually sit. Follow instructions for locks, supports and finger clearance during use. Would you fold the table every day, or would it remain open most of the time?
