Compare fixed, folding and mobile benches around the job, support requirements and the space needed to work.

Choose the work before the bench
A bench for light repairs has different needs from one used for heavy assembly or powered tools. List the ordinary tasks and the largest project you expect to handle. Include clamps, workpieces and the space needed to stand on more than one side.
Test a comfortable working position with the intended user. A convenient surface height depends on the task and how it is performed. Avoid choosing purely from the dimensions of an existing storage shelf.
Fixed benches offer a permanent destination
A fixed bench keeps tools and small parts close to the work and avoids daily setup. IKEA BROR is one manufacturer example of a freestanding workbench. Confirm the actual model’s intended use and load instructions. Do not assume it is a machine stand for equipment with vibration or concentrated loads.
Plan a clear area beside the task for parts and tools. Storage below can be useful, but it should not prevent the user standing comfortably or reaching required equipment controls.
Folding and mobile options need a movement plan
A folding bench needs suitable support and a reliable working position. Check the hinges, brackets and fixing structure as a complete system. Measure its projection when open and the space needed to fold it without trapping tools or cables.
A mobile bench can move between tasks, provided its casters, brakes and construction suit the application. Consider floor irregularities and how the loaded bench will be controlled. Mobility is a design feature, not permission to move any heavy project while it is assembled.
Make cleanup part of the layout
Keep frequently used tools accessible and give scraps, parts and unfinished work separate destinations. Leave an easy route to return tools so the bench does not become permanent storage. Follow equipment instructions for dust control, power and clearances.
Try one clear surface before adding a wall of accessories. Check stability, support, lighting and the task routine. The useful bench is one that remains available when the next small job appears.
