Light the preparation area clearly and keep shared surfaces useful for cooking, serving and everyday tasks.

Light the work, not just the room
A bright ceiling does not guarantee a well-lit cutting area. Stand at the counter and notice whether your body casts a shadow over the place where you prepare food. Under-cabinet lighting can place light nearer the task, while a ceiling or pendant arrangement may serve other parts of the room.
Assess lighting with the actual cabinet fronts, worktop sample and normal standing position. Reflective finishes can create glare. A small trial with the intended fitting is more informative than judging its brightness in an empty showroom.
Plan a complete compatible system
IKEA MITTLED is a product example of kitchen counter lighting. Check the selected model’s required driver, connection cords, controls and installation instructions. A light strip alone may not include the components needed for a complete installation.
Keep power supplies and connections accessible for service. Route cables away from moving hardware and areas where they could be damaged. Use a qualified installer for work that requires one; an integrated appearance should not make future replacement impossible.
Let one surface serve more than one task
A preparation counter may also become a breakfast spot or occasional workspace. Keep a clear area that can change use without moving a row of permanent appliances. Store task-specific items nearby so the surface can be reset quickly.
Do not assume an added extension has the same load or heat limits as the fixed counter. Check the surface and support instructions for the intended task. Keep lighting controls reachable in each working position, including seated use where relevant.
Use separate controls where they help
Task lighting and softer room lighting can be controlled independently when the system supports it. Choose controls that everyone can understand. A useful manual control remains valuable even when a connected system is available.
Before ordering, confirm fitting dimensions, cabinet mounting, power components and the view of the light source from across the room. The aim is a comfortable working area that stays useful as the kitchen changes task.
